Inner City Students Travel To Honduras to Meet with President About UN Millennium Goals

South Central Los Angeles Charter School Students Dream Big and Share Their Goals For A Brighter Future

What: Vielka McFarlane, founder of Celerity Charter Schools (http://www.celerityschools.org/) in Los Angeles, along with four of her 8th grade students, are traveling to Honduras to meet with president Manuel Zelaya and first lady Xiomara Castro de Zelaya to discuss their participation in The United Nations Millennium Goals. As part of their eight grade curriculum, these students are taking part in The Dream Project (http://www.dreamprojectun.org/) – an offshoot of the Millennium Goals - and are taking action to find or create solutions to problems identified in the United Nation’s Millennium Goals such as combating hunger, poverty, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination by the year 2015. By doing so, these students are helping to create a brighter future for themselves, their communities and the entire world.

They will be sharing their experiences with President Zelaya in hopes the president will implement these ideas and curriculum into schools throughout Honduras. The group will also be meeting with former president Ricardo Maduro, who vowed to change the world after his son was kidnapped and murdered. Former President Maduro will share his wisdom and experience on suppressing violence and crime, a topic that closely surrounds these students on a daily basis.

Who: In 2005 Celerity Nascent, the first school of Celerity Educational Group, opened with 390 students and was the largest non-conversion charter school opening in the history of charter schools in the United States. Located in South Central Los Angeles, Celerity Nascent now enrolls more than 500 students from grades K through 8, and two new charter schools (Celerity Dyad and Celerity Troika) opened in September 2007. Celerity schools are communities of diverse individuals where students develop their intellectual, artistic, and physical talents to the highest degree and create an environment that breeds empowerment and strength.
